Installation

BiscuitTin is distributed as a Flatpak bundle, attached to each GitHub release. It runs on the Freedesktop 26.08 runtime, from Flathub.

Install

  1. Install Flatpak, if your distribution doesn’t have it: see flatpak.org/setup.

  2. Download biscuittin_<version>_x86_64.flatpak from the latest release.

  3. Install it for your user. The runtime is installed from Flathub automatically.

    flatpak install --user biscuittin_<version>_x86_64.flatpak
  4. Run it. A default config is written on first start if none exists (see Getting started):

    flatpak run io.github.jamesread.biscuittin

To update, install the newer bundle the same way.

Where files live

A Flatpak app keeps its files in its own directory, ~/.var/app/io.github.jamesread.biscuittin/, rather than the usual ones:

File Path

Config

~/.var/app/io.github.jamesread.biscuittin/config/biscuittin/config.yaml

Home Assistant token

~/.var/app/io.github.jamesread.biscuittin/config/biscuittin/homeassistant.token

Settings

~/.var/app/io.github.jamesread.biscuittin/.local/state/biscuittin/settings.yaml

Caches and app logs

~/.var/app/io.github.jamesread.biscuittin/cache/biscuittin/

More > Diagnostics shows the paths in use. To use files elsewhere, such as images for the local background provider, give the app access first, for example:

flatpak override --user --filesystem=~/Pictures/tv:ro io.github.jamesread.biscuittin

Permissions

Permission Why

X11, IPC and all devices

To draw the full-screen window with the GPU, and read gamepads.

Network

Icons, background images, OliveTin and Home Assistant, and the web remote (which stays off until you switch it on).

org.freedesktop.Flatpak

BiscuitTin is a launcher: each tile runs its command on the host, with flatpak-spawn --host.

The last permission means BiscuitTin can run any command on your computer, outside the sandbox. That is what a launcher is for, but it means the sandbox does not limit what your config’s entries can do.

Entries run with the host session’s environment plus their own env, in the host’s view of the file system, so commands and paths in your config are the host’s.

Autostart on a TV box

Run flatpak run io.github.jamesread.biscuittin from your session’s autostart, for example in an i3 config:

exec --no-startup-id flatpak run io.github.jamesread.biscuittin
